Caroline Gray is an illustrator and mixed media artist living and working in Cambridge, UK.
Her most recent creations are multi-layered and dimensional mixed media resin pieces. She pours layer upon layer of epoxy resin, embedding handmade polymer clay ‘slices’, glass shards, beads and fibres as well as layers of poured paint. The resulting surface is glassy smooth and there is an intriguing sense of depth to the pieces which invites close inspection.
Caroline is inspired by patterns in nature, as well biological systems and structures invisible to the naked eye. Her visual language draws directly from microscopic imagery of bacteria, fungi and cells. Most of all she seeks to create work which elicits a joyful and visceral response.
After obtaining her BA in Visual Art from Brown University (Providence, RI) Caroline worked as Assistant Director in contemporary art galleries in both Providence and London before moving to Cambridge to pursue an MA in Children’s Book Illustration. She has recently completed her first children’s picture book Monster Match (Hodder, September 2018) and she continues to work on new children’s book projects as both author and illustrator. Her illustration work can be viewed here.
